ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — A new "all abilities" playground and park is now open in Altoona.
Organizers with the Central-Blair Recreation and Park Commission celebrated and dedicated the recreational area, naming it “Garden Heights Park."
Organizers say they're "very excited" about their accomplishment and say they've received appreciation from the surrounding community.
"Where we're standing, this used to be a kind of not-so-great basketball court. So, we were able to take out the basketball court, and reuse and repurpose this space to something that the community can be proud of.

Mass shooting suspect at Prague university was a student, police say
PRAGUE (TND) — At least 14 people were shot dead and 25 were injured after a mass shooting at a university in downtown Prague Thursday, according to Prague Police Chief Martin Vondrasek. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise.
Police reported the 24-year-old gunman's body was found at Charles University's faculty of arts where he was a student and did not publicly name him. Motorcycle bike run brings awareness to the community
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Community members in Cambria County came together for a 75-mile motorcycle awareness bike run Saturday.
The money raised benefited the families of two young adults, one fatally and one critically injured, while on a motorcycle ride back in July.
There were five stops throughout the run, before it wrapped back up at Slammin Sam's for a dinner buffet, basket party and live music.
The event was hosted by the Chrome Angelz Steele Vengeance Ladies RC, which is a nonprofit organization, that helps uplift people in need in the community.

Windber police receives grant to buy building, hire new officers
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — A police department in Somerset County won't have to rent space for much longer.
The Windber Police Department is in the process of buying the building that they're currently renting.
There will be a $92,000 grant for technology equipment and upgrades and a $100,000 grant for the new building.
A grant will also be going towards hiring a new full-time officer.
An additional $100,000 is coming from a private trust for the building.

Atlanta parents join national push for accountability in urban school districts

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — More Somerset County residents are getting access to high-speed internet after a recent study to find areas with no service, or underserved areas, identified a few areas with the most need.
Middlecreek and Upper Turkeyfoot townships, as well as Jenner, Lincoln, Quemahoning and Somerset townships were prioritized.
At Tuesday’s commissioners meeting, it was noted that more than 18-hundred homes now have access to broadband internet through Verizon in the Middlecreek and Turkeyfoot project.

Teen in 'stable condition' following accidental shooting outside Cambria Co. gym

Police have released more details regarding a shooting that occurred at MorGainz Fitness, in Jackson Township, Cambria County, Sunday morning.
According to officers with the Jackson Township Police Department, the shooting involved one juvenile who accidentally shot himself in a car in the parking lot of the business around 11:30 a.m.
Officials said the 13-year-old was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Woman charged for stealing donation box from Decker's Chapel
ST. MARYS, Pa. — A small historical church in Elk County recently took a big hit.
St. Marys Police Chief Tom Nicklas said the donation box from Decker’s Chapel was vandalized and stolen.
Nicklas said through surveillance cameras, police identified one of the vandals as Breanna Uhl, 25, of Force.
Uhl is facing several charges including institutional vandalism, theft and intentional desecration of a public monument.
Nicklas said charges are pending against a second person.
